Dare to Dream

Whats your Dream?

Many people say they don’t know what their dream is. Of course you may have many dreams and not just one. So how can you begin to discover what yours is? Here are some ways to explore what your dreams and talents are right now.

On an Inspire Scotland conference recently I heard a girl singing during the break. I looked over as she had a wonderful voice. Later I met her and talked to her about the Dare to Dream cd and how it aims to inspire you to follow your dreams. She turned to me and said “but I don’t know what my dream is!”. I replied and said “I heard you singing earlier and you have a wonderful voice. Do you love singing” I asked”. She replied “absolutely!”. “Well thats your answer” I said “theres no need to analyse anything else. If you love it, then nouish it and build your dream.”

Make a list of everything you love doing - being creative, being in a team, meeting people, managing, writing, earning, contributing, overcoming challenges, being outdoors, being indoors and so on. Take a piece of paper and write “what I love” in the middle and then brain storm all the ideas that come to you. Don’t qualify anything - if it comes to mind write it down. You’ll be surprised how many inspiraitonal thoughts come to you. Also remember love will let you know where you will have the most fulfilling success and if you love it you’re most likely to keep at it when the going gets challenging. You can also ask yourself what do you love about the work you already do - there may be certain things about your current work which you like. How can you create more of the same in your job? Maybe the job you’re in could creatively have all the answer you’re looking for.

Another area to explore is your youth. Many people will tell you that they learnt something when they were young and loved it but gave it up when they got caught up making a living doing something they don’t really like. Life is too precious to spend years doing something you don’t like. Even if its only for a few hours a week to begin with go back to what you loved and nourish that within your life. One lady I know, Mary Bond, decided to write her novel. She remained in her day job and set herself a goal to write her first book. When she came home in the evenings thats what she worked on and a couple of years ago I had the privilege of being invited to her first book launch. She has now published her second book. For more information on Mary and some tips on writing see her website www.mary-bond.com

Think about what you loved when you were young - something which when you were doing it you were totally present and naturally felt joyous. Sometimes if you watch children playing you will discover what you used to love doing yourself.

Another way to explore your talents and gifts is to ask people close to you what do they think you’re good at. At the very least this will give you more ideas.

If you really want to explore what is within you have a go at the following: take a piece of paper and write down the questions “What do I love? What are my passions? What are my talents and gifts? Do this just before going to sleep at night. Put the piece of paper beside your bed and have a pen handy. As you go off to sleep repeat the questions in your mind. Expect an answer to arise. Tell your subconscious to wake you when the answer comes. Its really important to EXPECT an answer - have faith in it. It may take a few tries over a few nights but stay with it. As soon as you wake up write down whatever ideas you have. Again remember no need to qualify, write down all the ideas that come to you. So in summary here’s some ways to discover your dreams:

make a list of everything you love to do

recall what you loved when you were young

ask your friends what do they think your talents are

tap into your subconscious via your dreams

watch children at play

While performing music at a wedding last week I got talking to a lady in her late sixties. She told me when she was in school she had a clef palet and a speech impediment and was not considered academically talented. However she said “I’ve always been very good with my hands and believed that to be my greatest talent, doing embroidery, dress making and such like.” She then looked me in the eye and said “you see everyone has talent, absolutely everyone!”

So now is your opportunity to do the above tasks and discover yours.
